Side control escape to guard

An escape that uses frames and hip movement to recover guard from under side control.

How to read it

What this entry helps you see

This escape rebuilds guard from under side control by framing, shrimping, and inserting a knee. Timing and frame alignment matter more than strength. Recover a recognizable guard before the top player settles a heavier pin.

Key steps

  1. From under side control, build a frame on the neck and a frame on the near hip.
  2. Shrimp your hips away to open space between you and the top player.
  3. Slide your near knee into the space you created.
  4. Use the knee shield to keep distance as you continue to turn.
  5. Recover closed or open guard and reconnect your grips.

Study cues

  1. Build frames on the neck and hip before moving
  2. Shrimp to create space for the knee
  3. Insert the knee across before extending to guard

Common errors

  1. Bench-pressing with open elbows
  2. Shrimping without frames in place
  3. Waiting until the head and far hip are controlled
