Hip escape (shrimp)

The fundamental hip movement that creates space and underlies most bottom escapes.

The hip escape, or shrimp, moves your hips away from a partner to create space for a frame, a knee, or a recovery. It is the movement underneath most escapes from mount, side control, and knee on belly. Learning it cleanly as a solo movement makes those escapes feel like variations of one habit rather than separate techniques.

Key steps

  1. Lie on your back with your knees bent and your feet flat.
  2. Turn to one side and post your feet and a frame to set your base.
  3. Push off your feet to lift and drive your hips away from that side.
  4. Land facing slightly to the side with your knees ready to reconnect.
  5. Reset flat and repeat to the other side to travel or recover.

Study cues

  1. Turn to your side before pushing off the feet
  2. Drive the hips away, not just the shoulders
  3. Finish with the knees available to frame or reconnect

Common errors

  1. Pushing with the upper body while the hips stay put
  2. Staying flat on the back instead of turning to a side
  3. Moving the head and shoulders without the hips following
