Hip bump sweep
A sweep that uses a sit-up motion and hip drive to reverse a posturing opponent.
How to read it
What this entry helps you see
The hip bump uses your own sit-up and a hip lift to take an opponent over one shoulder. It pairs naturally with the kimura, since both start from the same sit-up when the opponent posts a hand. Keep the motion controlled so your partner can post safely.
Key steps
- From closed guard, open your legs and sit up onto one supporting hand.
- Reach your free arm over the top player shoulder and grip the upper arm.
- Post your feet and load your hips toward the same side.
- Drive your hips up and into the shoulder you have controlled.
- Follow the roll and land in mount, keeping your base as you settle.
Study cues
- Sit up on a supporting arm as you open the guard
- Reach over the far shoulder to control the arm
- Bump the hips into the space you created
Common errors
- Sitting up without a supporting post
- Bumping before controlling the far arm
- Using only arm strength instead of the hips
