Closed guard

A guard configuration built around leg connection, posture control, and angle.

How to read it

What this entry helps you see

Closed guard is most useful when the legs, grips, and hip angle work together. The bottom player manages posture and creates angles. The top player restores alignment, protects inside position, and opens the guard without gifting balance.

Study cues

  1. Connect legs before chasing upper-body grips
  2. Break alignment before attacking
  3. For top position, rebuild posture before opening

Common errors

  1. Hanging from the ankles alone
  2. Attacking square without changing angle
  3. Opening the guard while posture is still compromised
