Body lock takedown
A takedown that closes distance to a locked grip around the torso and off-balances to the mat.
How to read it
What this entry helps you see
The body lock closes the distance and secures a locked grip around the partner torso, often with an underhook won in the pummel. From there you off-balance the partner over a corner or trip a leg to bring them down. Chest connection and hip position matter more than a hard squeeze.
Key steps
- Win the inside position in the pummel and close the distance.
- Lock your hands around the partner torso, keeping your chest tight.
- Lower your level and load the partner weight toward one corner.
- Off-balance them over that corner or block a leg with your foot.
- Guide the partner down while keeping your own posture.
- Follow to a controlled top position, protecting your head and neck.
Study cues
- Win the underhook and close the distance before locking
- Keep the chest connected and the lock tight
- Off-balance to a corner rather than lifting straight up
Common errors
- Locking the hands with a gap between the chests
- Squeezing without off-balancing
- Reaching for the lock while leaning off your base
