Rear naked choke
A strangle from back control that closes the arms around the neck without a collar.
How to read it
What this entry helps you see
The rear naked choke closes a strangle with one arm across the neck and the opposite arm framing behind the head. From back control you protect the position first, then build the choke in steps. This strangle acts quickly, so apply slowly and release the instant your partner taps.
Key steps
- From back control, keep both hooks or a body triangle and stay chest to back.
- Slide your choking arm across the throat until your elbow points at the chin.
- Place the hand of that arm on the biceps of your other arm.
- Bring your second hand behind the partner head to frame it forward.
- Draw your arms together slowly to close the strangle.
- Release immediately on any tap.
Study cues
- Keep chest-to-back connection before building the choke
- Feed the choking arm deep so the elbow lines up with the chin
- Close the strangle by connecting the arms, not by yanking
Common errors
- Reaching for the neck before the position is stable
- Leaving the elbow off-center so the throat is not framed
- Squeezing suddenly instead of tightening with control
