Back escape to guard

An escape from back control that clears the controls and returns to a front-facing guard.

How to read it

What this entry helps you see

The back escape protects the neck first, then walks the shoulders to the mat and slides the hips out to face the opponent. Defending one control at a time keeps you safe while you recover. The goal is a front-facing guard, not a scramble.

Key steps

  1. From back control defense, use both hands to protect your neck against the choking arm.
  2. Drop one shoulder toward the mat and slide down toward the choking-arm side.
  3. Walk your shoulders to the floor so your back is flat against it.
  4. Clear the top hook while keeping your neck protected.
  5. Slide your hips out and turn to face the partner.
  6. Establish a front-facing guard and reconnect your frames.

Study cues

  1. Defend the neck before addressing the hooks
  2. Put a shoulder to the mat and follow the partner
  3. Slide the hips out once the upper body is clear

Common errors

  1. Fighting the hooks while the neck is exposed
  2. Bridging without moving a shoulder toward the mat
  3. Turning into the choke instead of clearing it first
